Ignoring your car’s recommended engine oil change JB schedule is a risky gamble. The immediate problems might seem minor, but they quickly escalate into major, costly issues.

• Increased Engine Wear: Old, dirty, and thinned oil cannot properly lubricate engine parts. This leads to increased friction, causing components like bearings, camshafts, and cylinder walls to wear down prematurely. You might notice a rougher engine sound or reduced performance.
• Sludge Build-Up: As oil breaks down and collects contaminants, it forms thick, tar-like sludge. This sludge can block critical oil passages, starving parts of lubrication. Think of it as hardening arteries for your engine.
• Overheating: Degraded oil loses its ability to cool the engine effectively. Increased friction also generates more heat. This combination can lead to engine overheating, which can warp cylinder heads or damage head gaskets.
• Reduced Fuel Efficiency: A struggling engine with poor lubrication has to work harder, consuming more fuel. Over time, the cost of extra fuel will far outweigh the savings from delaying an oil change.
• Engine Failure: In severe cases, extreme delays can lead to catastrophic engine failure. Bearings can seize, piston rings can stick, and the engine can simply “lock up,” requiring a complete engine rebuild or replacement – an expense that could run into tens of thousands of Ringgit.

How far is too far?

While high-quality full synthetic oils might offer a small margin, extending beyond a few hundred kilometres past the recommended interval is generally ill-advised. Pushing it significantly, say over 1,000 to 2,000 km past the due date, drastically increases the risk of serious engine damage. The slight savings is never worth the potential repair bill.
